Watchdogs warn that UAVs increase “First Amendment risks for would be political dissidents”.

Several prominent privacy watchdog groups have petitioned the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on the proposed increase in the use of unmanned aerial vehicles in the skies above the US.

Over 30 rights groups, including The American Civil Liberties Union, The Electronic Privacy Information Center and The Bill of Rights Defense Committee are demanding that the FAA hold a rulemaking session to consider the privacy and safety threats posed by the increased use of drones.

The petition (PDF) notes that because “drones greatly increase the capacity for domestic surveillance”, including the use of sophisticated high-definition digital and infrared cameras, heat sensors and motion detectors, they must be subject to increased rather than relaxed scrutiny and regulation.

The petition also notes that the FAA must follow its legal mandate and protect the safety of Americans by “resolv[ing] the privacy problems association with the highly intrusive nature of drone aircraft, and the ability of operators to gain access to private areas or to track individuals over large distances.”

The privacy groups also note that the use and retention of data gathered by government and privately operated drones should be flagged.

“The consequences of increased government surveillance through the use of drones are even more troubling.” the petition notes. “The ability to link facial recognition capabilities on drone cameras to the FBI’s Next Generation Identification database or DHS’ IDENT database, two of the largest collections of biometric data in the world, increases the First Amendment risks for would be political dissidents.”

Congress recently passed legislation paving the way for what the FAA predicts will be somewhere in the region of 30,000 drones in operation in US skies by 2020.

Once signed by president Obama, the FAA Reauthorization Act allows for the FAA to permit the use of drones and develop regulations for testing and licensing by 2015.

The bill will exponentially speed up and streamline the process by which the FAA authorizes the use of drones by federal, state and local police and other government agencies. Currently, the FAA issues a certificate on a case by case basis.

The legislation represents the result of a huge push by the military industrial complex to open up US skies to what will become a multi-million dollar business.

The ACLU has noted that “This bill would push the nation willy-nilly toward an era of aerial surveillance without any steps to protect the traditional privacy that Americans have always enjoyed and expected.”

A recent Rasmussen poll found that despite a willingness on the part of Americans to see the use of drones by the military in overseas situations, 52% oppose the use of surveillance drones by private entities, police agencies, and government agencies inside the US. Just 30% said they were in favor of the use of drones in the US.

Report Reveals Facebook Spying on Smartphone Users’ Text Messages, Other Privacy Breaches

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

Madison Ruppert
End the Lie

A report published by the London Sunday Times has revealed that Facebook has been accessing and reading the personal text messages of users of their social networking app.

Unfortunately the report itself is locked behind a pay wall, but the report has been partially summarized by Fox News (let’s just hope it’s more accurate than most of their reporting).

Facebook has reportedly even admitted reading the text messages, claiming that they were accessing data without the knowledge of users as part of a trial in an effort to launch their own messaging service.

This is just another piece of evidence which supports statements made by individuals like Julian Assange of WikiLeaks who said in an interview with RT, “Facebook in particular is the most appalling spying machine that has ever been invented.”

It appears that Facebook is not alone, although my readers who have been keeping up on my coverage of Big Brother technology likely assume as much.

Some of the other culprits mentioned in Fox’s summary are Flickr, which is now under the Yahoo! umbrella, as well as Yahoo! Messenger itself.

The Sunday Times also reported that dating site Badoo has accessed the private data of smartphone users while also reporting that some apps allow companies to delve much deeper into the private lives of users.

Some apps apparently can even allow companies to intercept phone calls, although that isn’t all that surprising given that it is essentially what Google is allowing themselves to do with their new privacy policy which is not only impossible to opt-out of but also steps up their Big Brother practices to new heights.

Of course this is just yet another way the massive and accelerating data collection arms race amongst Silicon Valley giants manifests itself in our lives.

The newspaper’s investigation found that some apps are even capable of hijacking users’ devices in ways which are much more troubling than just the reading of text messages.

This includes YouTube which is apparently able to remotely access and operate smartphone cameras, even the controls of such cameras allowing for photographs or videos to be taken at any time.

It is unclear if the YouTube app automatically loaded on to all Apple iPhones has this capability as well. This would be even more troubling because it is actually impossible to remove and newer versions of the iPhone are outfitted with dual cameras, making for a top-notch covert surveillance device.

The publicly available information on this investigation does not stipulate if it was restricted to one operating system, although one can assume that it focused on the Android operating system.

This is because one app was singled out called the Tennis Juggling Game (only available in the Android Market) which is produced by a smaller company yet is still capable of intercepting the phone calls of users.

Another app singled out for its ability to intercept phone calls was My Remote Lock, a security app made by another small company called eAgency Mobile Security which is also only available on the Android Market.

For some, it might be easy to dismiss the dangers of large corporations harvesting highly sensitive private user data since they are “reputable” and according to some, trustworthy.

Yet, when it comes to unknown companies collecting the information and doing whatever they please with it, I doubt as many people would be as quick to accept it.

Emma Draper from the Privacy International campaign organization was quoted as saying, “Your personal information is a precious commodity, and companies will go to great lengths to get their hands on as much of it as possible.”

Indeed, this couldn’t be more accurate and is precisely why I discount the statements made by Google and other industry giants recently which claim that they will introduce a “do-not-track” privacy button allowing users to block their personal information from being harvested when using the Google Chrome browser.

This would put the entire business model upon which Google is built in danger and a company that big would never choose to put their revenue source at risk of being completely eradicated.

While the over 500,000 apps in Apple’s App Store are covered by the same terms and conditions, the Android Market works a bit differently.

As you can see on the pages linked above, there is a tab labeled “permissions” which lists what the given application has access to on your phone.

To be fair, Google is pretty transparent about the capabilities of applications in this regard, with the My Remote Lock app’s permissions page saying, “Malicious applications may read your confidential messages” and “Malicious applications may monitor, redirect, or prevent outgoing calls” amongst other warnings which most users likely ignore completely or never read to begin with.

This was confirmed by a YouGov poll for the newspaper which found that a whopping 70 percent of smartphone users rarely or never read the terms and conditions policy of an app when downloading it to their device.

This has become a chronic problem in the digital world, with massive and sometimes difficult to find and understand fine print accompanying many services and devices.

Due to the sheer size of these texts and the “legalese” often utilized therein, it makes complete sense that most consumers would never bother with them.

However, that lapse allows for things like this to happen and the apathy of users seems to reinforce the drive for companies to collect as much personal information as humanly possible, even if it is done in deceptive or secretive ways.

This is also allowed – if not encouraged – by governments because it serves as an invaluable intelligence collection asset. People actually choose to carry around a surveillance device with them at all times and most corporations are happy to fill any user information requests from government agencies without protest.

Yet thankfully here in the United States there are a few of our so-called representatives who are standing up against these invasions of privacy and highly invasive software like Carrier IQ.

Unfortunately the support is not nearly as widespread as it should be and unless consumers start actually paying attention and taking control of their personal information, there is nothing stopping companies for continuing or even expanding these practices.

OWS Set to Return, Media Aids the Appearance of ‘Organic’ Movement

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

Steven Birn
Steven Birn Speaks

If one were to listen to the mainstream media you would think Occupy Wall Street has gone away.

But for a handful of violent clashes with police, the OWS movement has moved out of the headlines. Last year the media didn’t warn the country about the impending Wall Street protests organized far in advance by Stephen Lerner of SEIU, Van Jones and others. They then pretended like the movement was organic, suddenly popping up out of nowhere. Never mind that the left was on record concerning their plans to protest banks, investment houses and the rich generally. The media is pulling the same stunt again.

OWS is set to return April 9th with something called a “99% Spring.” This supposedly non-violent week of protests is being organized by a who’s who of leftists and leftist organizations. The UAW, Moveon.org, Engage, Progressive Democrats of America, Van Jones, Sarita Gupta etc. These folks are planning for massive protests throughout the country during the week of April 9th. Yet the media is going to portray the protests as an organic, spontaneous event. Never mind that the left issued a press release on the subject on February 15th and has spent many months organizing the protests.

Uaw 99 Percent Spring Daily Caller

It appears the UAW is taking the lead in organizing the 99% Spring. This is interesting in light of the fact that the UAW was the biggest beneficiary of Obama’s car industry bailout. The UAW isn’t the only one organizing this though as several George Soros funded organizations such as moveon.org are also organizing.

While the 99% Spring rhetoric is peaceful and points towards Martin Luther King’s non-violent protests, we must not forget the violence of Occupy Wall Street. What the OWS folks are doing with the 99% Spring is trying to avoid a violent meltdown similar to 1968. It seems unlikely given the violence of OWS and the racism and anti-Semitism also found at OWS protests. They can talk about non-violence until they’re blue in the face, the fact is OWS was violent and many of the 99% Spring organizers have advocated violence in the past. In short, non-violence is just a buzz word meant to placate people who aren’t really paying attention. It means nothing to the organizers.

The whole point of this movement is to overthrow the American government as we know it. They want to enforce socialism, if not outright Marxism. Last year OWS at times advocated killing capitalists and in the very least sought to demonize anyone with money. Well, anyone with money not associated with them. George Soros is a good rich guy, so are rich Hollywood leftists. All the other guys are evil.

When the 99% Spring begins, all organized by the UAW, Van Jones and any number of other leftists, the media will act shocked by the grassroots nature of it all. They’ll be amazed at how much these protesters care. The truth is that just like OWS, the 99% Spring will be nothing more than a highly organized protest meant to bring chaos to the streets and push the country towards totalitarian socialism. The media won’t tell you that but if you follow what these people are, how they’re organizing and what they’re goals are it becomes very clear. The far left has a formula, they’re up front about it if you dig around a little bit. The dirty secret is that OWS and the 99% Spring are nothing but an organized astro-turf protest.

U.S. Intelligence Agencies Agree: No Evidence of Iranian Nuclear Weapons Program

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

Madison Ruppert
End the Lie

Despite the repeated statements made by United States Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta which have clearly indicated that Iran is not developing nuclear weapons and the analysis of the American intelligence community, the heated anti-Iranian rhetoric never seems to let up.

Indeed, it has even been reported by none other than the New York Times that intelligence analysts in America have yet to find any hard evidence indicating that Iran has even decided to construct a nuclear bomb.

American intelligence assessments have continued to be congruent with the 2007 intelligence report which clearly concluded that Iran had in fact completely abandoned their nuclear program years before (scroll to the bottom of the article to read the embedded report).

According to anonymous U.S. officials, this assessment was reinforced by the 2010 National Intelligence Estimate and “it remains the consensus view of America’s 16 intelligence agencies.”

So, how can the governments of the United States and Israel continue to ignore their own intelligence agencies and nonsensically push forward with the effort to go to war with Iran?

If nothing else, it has become painfully clear that our so-called leaders are ignoring any and all contrary evidence which might weaken their war effort and making the relentless push towards war.

Given that American intelligence agencies like the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) have concluded that the Iranian nuclear weapons program was likely halted all the way back in 2003 and Panetta himself has debunked the Iranian nuclear myth, it becomes evident that they have no interest in the truth.

To make matters even worse, it appears that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), an agency of the United Nations (UN) has now become little more than a tool of the warmongering factions of Western governments.

Recently the IAEA claimed that Iran had actually accelerated their nuclear program, increasing their production of highly enriched uranium and refused to answer some of the agency’s key questions about their program.

In their report issued Friday, the director-general of the IAEA, Yukiya Amano, said that their inspectors continue “to have serious concerns regarding possible military dimensions to Iran’s nuclear program,” according to the Los Angeles Times.

Apparently Amano and the IAEA know better than one of the best funded and arguably the most powerful intelligence community on the planet.

“As Iran is not providing the necessary cooperation … the agency is unable to provide credible assurance about the absence of undeclared nuclear material and activities in Iran, and therefore to conclude that all nuclear material in Iran is in peaceful activities,” Amano stated.

To any thinking person, this statement should be laughable. That’s like me saying that my neighbor cannot provide credible assurance about the absence of undeclared thirty foot tall spiders in his garage, and therefore I cannot conclude that my neighbor is peaceful.

If the IAEA is worried about “undeclared nuclear material and activities” they should be focusing their efforts solely on Israel, not Iran.

According to Reuters, even though the IAEA’s report was far from conclusive and the preponderance of the American intelligence community has dismissed the alleged Iranian nuclear weapons program, the latest report from the nuclear agency “will further inflame Israeli fears the Islamic Republic is pushing ahead with atomic bomb plans.”

“The report by the International Atomic Energy Agency gives added proof that Israeli beliefs are true” about Iran’s nuclear program, a statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said, according to AFP.

My favorite part of that statement is the usage of the world “beliefs,” since that is exactly what it is. It is not based on fact or logic but instead blind faith and a belief that Iran is this bloodthirsty, genocidal nation relentlessly seeking nuclear weapons.

Of course, none of that is true but apparently Netanyahu has no interest in the truth, either.

“Iran is pursuing its nuclear program with no end in sight. It is enriching uranium to 20 percent, totally ignoring demands by the international community,” Netanyahu also said.

Israeli leadership – especially Netanyahu – pointing to the demands of the international community is painfully ironic. Israel regularly rejects the opinion of the international community in their oppression of Palestinians, raids on humanitarian aid flotillas and more.

The White House has also jumped on the report as more fuel for the anti-Iranian fire. They stated that Iran was in violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions with their nuclear enrichment efforts, even though their own intelligence assets have said that there is no weapons program.

“When combined with its continued stonewalling of international inspectors, Iran’s actions demonstrate why Iran has failed to convince the international community that its nuclear program is peaceful,” Tommy Vietor, the White House National Security Council spokesman said.

The problem here is that Vietor is not speaking for the international community; he is merely speaking for the National Security Council – the same group that makes the call to murder American citizens without charge or trial.

There is no arguing against the reality of the Iranian nuclear program and their efforts to enrich nuclear fuel.

However, the problem arises when one makes the leap of faith required to come to the conclusion that Iran is developing nuclear weapons or their program is anything other than peaceful.

Iran is a sovereign nation and as such, the West has absolutely no right to tell them that they cannot pursue peaceful nuclear technology.

Thanks to the American intelligence community, yet another blow to the anti-Iranian propaganda has been dealt but obviously the leaders of the Western world care not about these facts.

Hopefully the real international community can take note of the truth and ignore the insane delusions of our so-called leaders who are making the relentless push to bring us to war.

Wyoming Introduces ‘Doomsday Bill’ to Prepare for Collapse of Federal Government

Monday, February 27th, 2012

Paul Joseph Watson
GCN Live.com

Lawmakers in Wyoming have introduced a bill that would compel the state to prepare for a complete collapse of the federal government, laying plans for an alternate currency, a standing army raised via a military draft, and an aircraft carrier.

“House Bill 85 passed on first reading by a voice vote. It would create a state-run government continuity task force, which would study and prepare Wyoming for potential catastrophes, from disruptions in food and energy supplies to a complete meltdown of the federal government,” reports the Wyoming Star Tribune.

Compared to the rest of the country, Wyoming’s public finances are in a relatively good condition, a fact that has spurred lawmakers to protect the state against contagion from other areas that could develop in the aftermath of a massive financial collapse.

The bill (PDF) lays the groundwork for how the state would respond in the event of a sudden devaluation of the dollar or “a situation in which the federal government has no effective power or authority over the people of the United States.”

“I don’t think there’s anyone in this room today what would come up here and say that this country is in good shape, that the world is stable and in good shape — because that is clearly not the case,” state Rep. Lorraine Quarberg, R-Thermopolis, said. “To put your head in the sand and think that nothing bad’s going to happen, and that we have no obligation to the citizens of the state of Wyoming to at least have the discussion, is not healthy.”

The bill has to pass two more House votes before it can be considered by the Senate. If passed, the task force would have until December 1, 2012 to submit a report to the governor detailing the continuity of government plan.

While authorities at both the state and federal level are making preparations for social dislocation, with FEMA recently ordering $1 billion dollars worth of dehydrated food, a total of 420 million meals, Americans who buy food supplies in bulk are being characterized as potential terrorists by the FBI.

Continuity of government plans implemented at the federal level are so sensitive that when the plan was last updated in 2007, Congressman Peter DeFazio was barred from seeing the details despite being a sitting member of the House Homeland Security Committee.

Peter DeFazio (D – OR) was asked by his constituents to see what was contained within the classified portion of the White House’s plan for operating the government after a catastrophic terrorist attack, but was denied access, leading him to comment, “Maybe the people who think there’s a conspiracy out there are right.”

Five years later, the biggest threat posed to America’s survival in its current form of government stems not from terrorists but from the country’s huge unsustainable national debt and the possibility of another economic collapse.

Recently, a USA Today article quoted three separate financial experts who all concur that the worst of the financial turmoil is yet to come, with trend forecaster Gerald Celente warning of an “economic 9/11″ that will provoke mass civil unrest fueled by anti-government sentiment.
