Does The Media Cause Racism, Or Does It Simply Report It?

A husband and wife scientific team in Georgia presented the results of a study that they claim proves that racist attitudes are not instinctual, but learned, predominantly from the mainstream media.

Paul Verhaeghen, Associate Professor of Psychology at Georgia Institute of Technology’s School of Psychology and Shelley Aikman, Associate Professor of Psychology at Gainsville State College, conducted an exclusive interview with AMERICAN FREE PRESS to discuss the results of the study.

AFP asked what inspired the study, since this wasn’t an area of their expertise. Professor Verhaeghen, a native of Belgium, was curious “why students tend to cluster in groups.”

“You have the black students in one part of the auditorium and you have the white students in another part,” he explained, “which to me always looked very strange. And those groups don’t interact with each other very much.”

Professor Verhaeghen described two types of racism: the very blatant kind and the “gut level” kind. The study focused on this gut level type of racism. “This kind of gut level racism seems to be part of almost everybody’s makeup, including black people,” he explained.

To demonstrate his theory, he conducted a test with some students “to see how quickly you associate white with good things and black with bad things.”

“The black students were very upset because they were finding out they were having a racist bias against black people just as much, or a little bit less, as whites students seem to have, which completely doesn’t make sense,” Verhaeghen said. “The really strange thing,” he continued, “is that blacks also associate blacks not whites, with violence.”

The test, which used only words and no pictures, employed something known as “priming,” where additional words are introduced to alter the outcome of the study. For example, seeing the words “black” and “gun” would elicit a different response from seeing just the word “gun” by itself.

“The idea with priming,” explained Professor Aikman, “is that you’re basically making them think of all their stereotypes, you’re making them accessible, so that when the next word comes up, they’ll respond quickly to it.”

The test utilized BEAGLE, the Bound Encoding of the Aggregate Language Environment, that contains a sample of books, newspaper and magazine articles, containing over 10 million words, which psychologists feel are representative of what Americans consume.

Establishment Media Poll: Republicans Hold Negative View of Ron Paul

According to the establishment media, most American favor Mitt Romney or New Gingrich over Ron Paul. “Compared with his main rivals for the GOP nod, Paul’s favorable numbers are far weaker among the general public and Republicans in particular,” reports the Washington Post today.

A poll conducted by the Washington Post and ABC claims most Republicans hold an unfavorable view of Paul and his libertarian philosophy of smaller government and adherence to the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

Republicans instead prefer the globalist insider and insane warmonger Newt Gingrich and the flip-flopper Mitt Romney who is indistinguishable from a Democrat, according to the establishment press.

“Fewer than four in 10 Republicans hold a favorable view of Paul. That compares with about six in 10 favorable ratings for former House speaker Newt Gingrich and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney,” the newspaper reports.

The Washington Post-ABC poll is obviously designed to counter a Bloomberg News poll conducted in mid-November that showed Paul coming in second at 19 percent. Paul was in a statistic dead heat with Herman Cain, Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich. In New Hampshire, Paul was at 17 percent, bested only by Romney.

It may also be intended to sideline the results of a poll conducted in Iowa on November 22. The Revolution PAC poll showed Paul leading with 25-percent support from Republicans, independents and disaffected Democrats. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich scored at 21 percent and businessman Herman Cain at 20 percent.

Many Democrats view Paul as the only anti-war candidate with a shot at the White House.

“The latest poll results clearly prove Ron Paul’s status as a top contender, and confirms that our campaign is continuing to surge in early states,” said Ron Paul 2012 Presidential Campaign Chairman Jesse Benton. “The American people are ready for real change in Washington and Dr. Paul is the only candidate, who has a plan to cut $1 trillion in spending, balance the budget, and restore prosperity to the American people.”

The establishment, however, is not ready for change and will do whatever is required to make sure one of their hand-picked candidates gets on the ballot next year.

Guardian Memory Holes Article on Ron Paul Video

Earlier this week, a new video showing how Romney and Gingrich have flip-flopped on key issues was posted on YouTube. It was briefly mentioned by The Guardian but then was predictably pulled today without explanation.

“As Paul’s team look at the field, they want to hit two targets. First, go for Romney to establish Paul as the alternative candidate to His Mittness. Second, slam the guy currently sitting in that spot: His Newtness. Other candidates – Bachmann, Perry and Cain – are clearly seen as having wasted their moment in the sun,” Paul Harris wrote before The Guardian sent his article to the memory hole.

Rand Paul: Americans Could Be Sent to Gitmo Under ‘Indefinite Detention’ Bill

Senator tells Judge Napolitano bill completely violates Constitution

Senator Rand Paul told Judge Andrew Napolitano last night that Americans could be stripped of their rights and sent to Guantanamo Bay under the terms of the ‘indefinite detention’ provision of the National Defense Authorization Act set to be passed by the Senate this week.

Appearing on Napolitano’s Fox Business show, Paul said it perplexed him “how anyone could vote to send an American citizen who’s been accused of a crime to a detention center in a foreign land without due process”.

Paul has offered an amendment to the NDAA bill that would completely strip Section 1031 from the legislation, although it’s unlikely to pass following yesterday’s rejection of Senator Mark Udall’s weaker amendment that would have merely provided more oversight.

The Senator said that he had spoken with other Republicans who had pointed out the numerous instances where the Constitution specifically mentions the right to a speedy trial, habeas corpus and legal due process, all of which would be completely eviscerated with the passage of the ‘indefinite detention’ provision of the National Defense Authorization Act.

Republican supporters of the bill are citing Supreme Court cases to justify the provision that don’t even validate their argument. As Napolitano pointed out, even a saboteur for the Nazis during World War II was allowed to have a trial because he was an American citizen and had innate rights that could not be stripped away.

Napolitano also makes the point that this is merely an act of codifying into law what previous Presidents violated the Constitution to do anyway, specifically under the “parallel legal system” initiated under the Bush administration, “In which terrorism suspects — U.S. citizens and noncitizens alike — may be investigated, jailed, interrogated, tried and punished without legal protections guaranteed by the ordinary system,” as the Washington Post reported in December 2002.

“I wonder how Americans will feel when they see troops in the streets on a regular basis, something no one now living has seen since it ended the last time in 1876,” said Napolitano, referring to how the bill characterizes the whole of America as a “battlefield” in which U.S. troops can freely operate and arrest American citizens.

Republican Congressman Justin Amash, another vehement critic of the legislation, also appeared on Judge Napolitano’s show last night to warn that the provision in the bill would inflict the same tyranny on Americans as under King George over two centuries ago.

“This country was built upon the idea of liberty and if we are fighting terrorism but destroying liberty in the process we’re not really accomplishing the goal of defending this country….American citizens should never be detained indefinitely without charge or trial at the discretion of the President – that is completely outrageous and my constituents agree with me,” said Amash.

Amash added that it would be a “travesty” to see the military engaged in law enforcement because that is “what our founders fought against” during the revolutionary war.

Buyback Fervor: Are CEOs Sending a Message to Investors?

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

American businesses appear to be more confident than ever that their future is brighter than the market suggests. Now that stocks are on fire-sale, according to some investors, companies are buying at an adjusted valuation 15% lower than the start of the credit crisis.

In 2011, the nation’s publicly-traded companies have invested some $453 billion in share repurchases, making 2011 one of the top three biggest years for buybacks. The last time companies were so eager to return profits to shareholders through large-scale buybacks was in 2006 and 2007, right before the burst of the housing bubble. The current buyback pace is running at 70% higher than in 2010.

Messages in Buyback Programs

Companies favor buybacks for any number of reasons, some of which are positive, and some of which show signs of a weakening economic climate. Here are some of those reasons:

1) Earnings volatility – Companies usually favor buybacks during periods of volatility in earnings. Not only do share repurchases set a price floor under a company’s stock, but repurchases are also favorable to dividend policies. In agreeing to open-ended share repurchases, companies do not have to be so public about moving cash. Dividends, which are far more public than buybacks, require continuity and consistency; otherwise, investors who chase yield leave inconsistent dividend payers for other opportunities.

2) Earnings weakness – One of the greatest failures on Wall Street is the inability to compare earnings from one period to another. Share repurchases allow companies to increase their earnings per share, as the same amount of earnings spread to fewer shares means better headline EPS figures. Repurchases can be used to temporarily cover up weakening corporate earnings, as many analysts rarely care to what extent a company is growing its bottom-line.

3) Better outlook – It is quite possible that companies have a much rosier internal projection for the future than Wall Street. Today, companies are generating three times as much cash, but sell for lower price to earnings ratios than found during the last wave of buybacks. Remember, despite the troubles for employment, many S&P500 components have managed to improve earnings by cutting wages, workforce numbers, and general inefficiency. While the consumption-side of the economy remains weak, corporate profits are still rising.

4) Shedding cash – Perhaps the strongest underlying component of capital structure decisions today is the relative benefit of cash on hand and the minute cost of debt. Companies hold record amounts of cash, much of which is invested in cash equivalents, which lose value to inflation with each passing day. Some companies, such as Amgen, find that the low-rate environment is reason enough to borrow cash for share repurchases–effectively levering the company due to favorable interest rate policy.

The Market’s Double-Speak

Past history tells us that insiders are generally poor stewards of investor capital and even poorer predictors of when their companies are or are not undervalued by the market. What happens at the micro-level isn’t entirely contradictory to the macro-message of debt and contagion that is sweeping through the headlines. In fact, the reality is that Wall Street’s most recent earnings growth is due to efficiency, not further investment, or true economic growth. Companies know what investors know: there is no reason to hold cash in the current market environment.
