The American Dream
Oct 29, 2010

The American people are mad. No, check that, they are steaming mad. In the weeks leading up to the election, poll after poll after poll has shown that the American people are angrier at government than at any other point in modern U.S. history. American voters have been angry before, but this time it is different. Instead of being mad at just one political party, the American people are now clearly disgusted with both political parties. Neither major party has a positive approval rating. People are sick and tired of the economy being in the tank, they are sick and tired of not being able to get good jobs and they are sick and tired of the nonsense that has been going on in Washington. Both political parties are busy pointing fingers at each other, but what all the major polls in the weeks leading up to the election clearly show is that the American people are placing the blame on both the Republicans and the Democrats. In fact, as you will see below, a clear majority of the American people now wish that they could throw every member of Congress out of office and a clear majority of the American people now wish that they had a third political party to vote for. We have arrived at a point where both political parties have lost the faith of the American people, and where we go from here is anyone’s guess.

Not that the American people have a clear idea of what they actually want. The truth is that the citizens of the United States are deeply, deeply divided on a whole host of issues. But the one thing that American voters can agree on is that they are hopping mad.

The following are 12 recent polls that prove that the American people are really, really pissed off as election day approaches….

#1 According to a recent USA Today/Gallup poll, only about one in four Americans is satisfied with the way that the country is being governed.

#2 The latest ABC News/Yahoo poll found that faith in the U.S. system of government is at a 36 year low.

#3 The newest New York Times/CBS News survey discovered that about 60 percent of American voters believe that their own members of Congress do not deserve to be re-elected.

#4 According to Gallup, Barack Obama had an average approval rating of just 44.7% during the seventh quarter of his presidency, which was a new low. Obama’s average approval rating has fallen substantially every single quarter since he took office.

#5 A Bloomberg National Poll conducted a couple of weeks ago found that more than 40 percent of likely voters who once considered themselves to be Obama supporters are now either less supportive of Obama or do not support him at all at this point.

#6 An absolutely stunning Gallup poll released last month revealed that a whopping 58 percent of the American people believe that a third political party is needed because the Republicans and the Democrats are doing such a bad job of representing the American people.

#7 A new study by The Washington Post, the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation and Harvard University discovered that more than 40 percent of the American people would give the government either a D or an F.

#8 CNBC recently conducted a survey which found that 92 percent of Americans rate the U.S. economy as either “fair” or “poor”.

#9 A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal survey revealed that 69 percent of Americans believe that free trade agreements have cost the United States jobs. Only 18 percent of the survey respondents said that they believed that free trade agreements have created more American jobs than they have lost.

#10 A Politico/George Washington University Battleground Poll released late last month found that 63 percent of the American people believe that the nation is on the wrong track.

#11 A recent Gallup poll discovered that 46% of Americans believe that the U.S. federal government “poses an immediate threat to the rights and freedoms of ordinary citizens.”

#12 A Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey that was just completed found that 65% of likely U.S. voters say that if they had the option, they would vote out every member of Congress and start all over.

So will all of this anger result in major change happening in Washington D.C. after the election?

No.

There are 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. At the very most, about 100 of those seats are actually “in play” – meaning that they have a chance to change hands.

So that means that we are going to see at least 335 of the exact same faces when the U.S. House of Representatives begins a new session.

The cold, hard reality is that our current system greatly, greatly, greatly favors incumbents.

Over the past five elections, incumbents have been re-elected to the U.S. House of Representatives at an average rate of 96 percent.

Wouldn’t you like to have a 96 percent chance of winning?

Sure, in 2010 things will be a little different, but we will still likely see incumbents winning at least 80 percent of their matchups.

So much for “change”, eh?

John Embry Sees Hyperinflation If Fed Continues On QE Path, Expects Silver At $50

Veteran PM expert, Sprott’s John Embry, whose observations on the lack of a bubble in precious metals we posted recently, and which came just before the CFTC’s own disclosure that there may be extensive manipulation in the silver market, as well as a lawsuit filed against JPM and HSBC for silver price manipulation, shares his latest thoughts with Eric King in a traditionally contrarian insightful interview. In a nutshell, Embry is confident the current Fed policy will lead to hyperinflation, and that he would not be surprised if silver hit $50 within the next few months.

Full interview can be heard here.

When asked about Art Cashin’s comments on hyperinflation Embry replied:

“I’m another person that worries hugely about hyperinflation, I mean the monetary path that they appear to be following, I guarantee you will lead to hyperinflation.

Regarding gold:

I think we are still on track post the US elections and the next FOMC meeting, if we get some indication of considerable QE on the horizon, I think that will be fuel again to send the gold price up from here and to get it to 30%+ return for the year.

On a gold squeeze:

I think it could very well happen this time because the physical market is robust, and I’m told there’s not a lot of physical gold available right now…We could very easily overrun the shorts at Comex and force them to cover, even though they have extraordinarily deep pockets. If that happens, we are going to see some really spectacular price moves as a result….I think that’s why when these things move, all the gold stocks, I think you’re going to feel like your hair’s on fire they’re going to move so fast.”

On Precious Metal manipulation:

“GATA has been getting a terrible abuse for their views on this subject. I’ve always believed they were dead right, that there is abundant evidence that on the whole the markets are manipulated. And now that this is starting to become maybe more common knowledge I think it could have an outsized impact on the price of these things, because if these guys can’t continue to play the game they played, I think the prices could go crazy.”

Regarding the US dollar:

“What it’s really going to collapse against is hard assets…I really don’t think people have any idea the extent to which the standard of living can fall in North America, particularly in the United States. I mean when a currency collapses against everything else, basically that is saying that the standard of living is going to fall. In fact, it could fall by 30, 40 or 50% just to pick some wild numbers, is not out of the question. Things have been pretty good for the last 60, 70 years in North America, and they think they’ll be good forever. It isn’t going to happen that way.”

Regarding the economy:

“We’ve got false hope here because of this paper generated recovery, but it’s unsustaintable because we haven’t dealt with any of the underlying issues. When this thing starts to implode again it’s going to get very unpleasant.”

As a reminder, John Embry has been in the business for 48 years. At the beginning of the secular bull market in gold, John was the only mainstream (RBC Capital at the time) institutional individual to proclaim the bull market in gold. RBC was saying that’s not the message of the bank, so John was taking a lot of heat for his stance. Fortunately for all of us Eric Sprott hired John out of the mainstream and the rest is history.

James Cameron and Google CEO: Questioning Warming Science is “Criminal”

Lock up the dissenters?

James Cameron and Google CEO: Questioning Warming Science is Criminal 291010CameronGoogle CEO Eric Schmidt and film director James Cameron recently concurred that people who question the science of anthropogenic global warming are, in their opinions, “criminal”.

The two made the comments during a recent on stage conversation at a private event in Silicon Valley.

“If that continues, business as usual as our leaders in Washington say is OK for us to do, we will have extincted 70% of the species on the planet by the end of the century.” Cameron responded to Schmidt’s line of discussion on global warming.

During the same conversation Schmidt stated, “There are people who in my view criminally doubt some of the science.”

“I agree, criminally, I agree with that.” Cameron interjected.

“People, we need to evolve mentally and philosophically to something that has never existed before.” the Avatar director continued.

“We need to become techno-indigenous people of an entire Earth, not of a nation, not of a state, but of a planet.”

Watch the video:

So, according to these two high priests of the scientific community, if you point out that the warming trend observed predominantly throughout the 1980s and 90s stopped over a decade ago, as admitted recently by both Professor Phil Jones, the figure at the head of the Climategate scandal, as well as one of the most prominent AGW advocate groups in existence, The Royal Society, you should be locked up.

Presumably the two would want to see thousands and thousands of scientists have their rights taken away and their freedoms eliminated, for merely expressing disagreement or dissent with the much lauded, rarely present “consensus”.

After all, questioning hypotheses and presenting counter-evidence and alternative theories has nothing at all to do with science – no no no, that’s the behaviour of morally corrupt criminals.

Cameron is of course, another green celebrity hypocrite. The man owns three large houses in Malibu, totaling 24,000 square feet – ten times the average US home. He also owns a 100 acre ranch in Santa Barbara and numerous private luxuries such as helicopters, Harley motorbikes, super cars, a yacht, and even a fleet of submarines. Nevertheless he demands that we all “live with less” because it is us that are responsible for killing the planet.

Earlier this year, Cameron said he wanted to debate the “deniers”, but then pulled out at the last minute even after the “criminals” agreed to endless dubious stipulations he kept demanding, such as no recording of the debate and no media coverage.

Cameron has also just given $1m to help defeat California’s Prop23 which will overturn the Global Warming Bill, legislation that critics have argued would cause unemployment to sky rocket, effectively killing dead the already crippled economy.

One wonders what punishments Cameron and Schmidt have in mind for global warming denying criminals? Perhaps execution, in line with the recent 10/10 propaganda campaign.

Bad Attitude Toward Officialdom? No Second Amendment in New York

In New York, you may be denied your Second Amendment right to own a rifle if administrative officials decide you are not of good moral character.

warholguns.jpg
Handguns are illegal in the city. Now they’re going for the long rifles.
Andy Warhol, Guns, 1981-1982.

Under Sections 434(b) and 1043 of the New York City Charter, the New York Police Department intends intends to adopt amendments to its rules pertaining to Handgun Licenses, Rifle/Shotgun Permits and Organizations Possessing Rifles and Shotguns.

Handguns are illegal in the city. Now they’re going for the long rifles.

If a person submitting to the police for the right to exercise the Second Amendment to the Constitution is found to have a “history of one or more incidents of domestic violence” — no conviction required, only presumably the evaluation of an administrative official — gun ownership shall be denied.

If the applicant has a poor driving record, has multiple driver license suspensions or has been declared a “scofflaw” by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, he or she will be denied the Second Amendment to the Bill of Rights.

A scofflaw is a person who habitually violates the law or fails to answer court summonses, according to the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language.

In New York, in order to have your natural right to own a firearm canceled, all that is required is an inappropriate attitude toward officialdom. “Other information demonstrates an unwillingness to abide by the law, a lack of candor towards lawful authorities, a lack of concern for the safety of oneself and/or other persons and/or for public safety, and/or other good cause for the denial of the permit.”

In other words, if the City of New York adopts the proposed amendments to its charter, police and other officials will be allowed to strip residents of their constitutional rights at any time for any arbitrary reason.

Fox News quotes Paul Helmke of the Brady Campaign, who says: “Child support, taxes, fines and governmental penalties I think are legitimate things. Basically, if someone’s not complying with what the government requires of somebody, that’s usually a sign that you can’t trust them to follow the rules with something like a gun.”

Stalin would have loved Mr. Helmke.

Such power defines totalitarianism. Totalitarianism is characterized by pervasive authoritarianism where ordinary citizens basically do not share in state decision-making and the state strives to regulate every aspect of public and private life wherever feasible.

In authoritarian states, they come for the weapons first.

Rand Paul Surges Ahead Of Conway Despite Stomp Smear

Rand Paul Surges Ahead Of Conway Despite Stomp Smear 291010top

Despite the Conway campaign shamelessly exploiting the notorious stomp on MoveOn activist Lauren Valle for political grist, while failing to mention that Valle herself attempted to assault Rand Paul before the fracas, Paul has surged ahead of his opponent in the latest poll, which shows the Kentucky candidate leading the race by nine points.

The poll, conducted by Survey USA for the Courier-Journal and WHAS-TV, took place between Sunday and Wednesday, so it would account for the reaction to Monday night’s events, which were ludicrously overblown by people like Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews as some kind of harbinger that Tea Partiers were the new brownshirts. Of course, Matthews, Olbermann, and the rest of the establishment talking heads were considerably less outraged when a MoveOn activist bit off the finger of a Tea Partier during an Obamacare protest last year.

As we highlighted yesterday, new video of the entire incident shows Valle attempt to assault Rand Paul before being dragged away by Paul supporters. The subsequent stomp was thuggish and rightly condemned by Paul, which is more than can be said for Conway, who has still failed to denounce an almost identical stomp on an injured female Rand Paul activist by one of his supporters that occurred before the Valle incident.

“Republican Rand Paul has opened up a huge lead in a new poll on the Kentucky Senate race, outpacing Democrat Jack Conway by 9 percentage points,” reports USA Today.

“Paul, an eye surgeon backed by the small-government Tea Party movement, is ahead 52 percent to 43 percent over Conway, the state’s attorney general, according to Gannett colleague Joe Gerth of the Courier-Journal in Louisville.”

A nine point lead just four days before the election is probably insurmountable for Conway, but with all the evidence of Democrats engaged in dirty tricks and vote fraud, don’t put anything past them.

All being fair, leftists are just going to have to admit defeat on this one. The establishment media’s sustained five month demonization campaign against Rand Paul, characterized by endless contrived smears and hoaxes, has failed completely.

If anything, the ceaseless attacks on Paul from a discredited establishment have helped his campaign. Last week, before the stomping controversy, a Mason-Dixon poll had Paul ahead by six points. If anything, he has increased his lead.

Indeed, some are even predicting a “Randslide,” and if Paul does comfortably beat Conway, it will represent a crushing indictment of the establishment media’s waning influence on politics, with the Internet beginning to take its place as Americans become more informed about the real problems that face America, and are not swayed by exaggerated jibes about Rand Paul’s college behavior 30 years ago and the infamous “Aqua Buddha” hoax.

Those who swallowed the hype whole and predicted that the smears against Paul ‘spelled the collapse of his political career’ are now having to eat their words.

Rand Paul is quickly building a reputation as a Teflon Senator. His unparalleled ability to stay on message and stick to the issues amidst a bombardment of manufactured hoaxes regurgitated by the corporate media should see him coast to victory next week, barring any last minute shenanigans by Conway, who as we have learned from the drug trafficking investigation involving his brother, is not shy of bending the law for his own purposes.
